Nepal is home to the many stunning and beautiful lakes on the planet. From mountains to hills and plains, we have lakes everywhere and each has its essence. The calm and large basin of freshwater, some transparent, some brilliantly blue in between hills, surrounded by mountain range or resting peacefully in plains can be a perfect escape from the chaos of city life. Highlighted here are ten randomly picked mesmerizing lakes, some infamous and some rarely visited, that you should think about visiting on your next outing to or trekking in Nepal.

Rara Lake

The Lake located in Karnali Zone, Jumla and Mugu District is also known as Mahendra Daha. It is the biggest lake in Nepal with a length of 8 km, breadth of 1.5 km and depth of 167 m. It lies about 3200m above sea level. Rara reflects the shadow of Sisne and Kanjirowa mountains.

Fewa Lake: This Lake is located in Pokhara, Kaski District of Gandaki Zone and is a very important lake for tourism. This lake reflects the shadow of Machhapuchhre and Annapurna Mountains.

Bhairav Kunda

This is a pure lake in the Langtang region of Nepal. It also has a religious significance amongst Hindu people as it is one famous pilgrimage destination of Nepal. From this lake, we can also see breathtaking views of others lakes including Dorje Lakpa, Rolwaling, and some other few Himalayan ranges.

Kajin Sara Lake

A group of mountaineers discovered the Kajin Sara Lake in early 2019. The lake is situated in Chame rural municipality of Manang district, Nepal. The lake is 1,500 meters long and 600 meters wide in its dimensions. A very calm environment, just the breeze from Mt. Annapurna makes everyone sync with the nature.

Tilicho Lake

This is the highest lake in Nepal standing at 4,919 m from main sea level. It is located in Manang District of Gandaki Zone. Its length is 4 km and breadth is 1.4 km. This lake was previously thought to be the highest in the world, but has since been surpassed.

Begnas Lake:

 Begnas Lake is a freshwater lake in Pokhara Lekhnath Metropolis of Kaski district of Nepal, located in the south-east of the Pokhara Valley. Water level in the lake fluctuates seasonally due to rain, and utilization for irrigation. The water level is regulated through a dam constructed in 1988 on the western outlet stream, Khudi Khola.

Indrasarovar

This is man-made lake, constructed for the hydropower reservoir of Kulekhani Hydropower Project is the Memory of Her Majesty's Princess Indra Rajya Laxmi Devi Shah. It is located in Makwanpur district with an Area of 7 km.

Shey Phokshundo Lake

Shey Phoksundo is located in Dolpa District of Karnali Zone in the lap of Kanjirowa Mountain.  This is the view from another edge of the Lake, Chholupo on the way to Upper Dolpa. It is 4hrs walking distance from Ringmo Village, and is also called ‘Ringmo’ locally. This lake is deepest lake of Nepal stands at 3900 m above sea level.

Gajako Lake (Rudra Lake)

It is a famous lake of Baglung District. It is located on the top of Damek V.D.C. It is characterized by many stories and tales. The lake is surrounded by trees but no leaves are found floating on the lake. People belive that when leaf falls in the lake, birds clear them.

Bis hazari Lake

Bis hazari Tal (literal meaning- 20 thousand) is an extensive oxbow lake system in the buffer zone of the Chitwan National Park, a protected area in the Inner Terai of central Nepal. It is in the southern curve of Bharatpur, Chitwan. The lake is very attractive for the bird lovers and serves as an important bird watching center. The lake area houses lots of crocodiles and thus is equally attractive for the reptile lovers.
