A girl is pictured during the Bel Bibaha ceremony held in Bhaktapur, Nepal. Bel Bibaha, or Ihi, is a marriage ceremony in the Newar community of Nepal in which pre-adolescent girls are "married" to the bael fruit (wood apple). . It is believed that this ritual started before the abolishment of Sati pratha in Nepal which refrained the newar girl to sacrifice her life in the deceased husband’s funeral pyre. Even if the husband dies a newar woman is never considered a widow as she had been married to Lord Bishnu, who is immortal.
